A single depends on one selection. A multiple combines several selections, and every leg normally has to win for the ticket to pay. Multiples create a larger displayed price because the probabilities are multiplied—but the chance of one leg failing also increases.
For example, three selections that each have a 60% estimated chance would have only about a 21.6% chance of all winning if the events were independent: 0.60 × 0.60 × 0.60. That is why an eight-leg “safe” multi often fails on the one result everyone believed was obvious.
How to build a more disciplined football multiple
- Choose the reason before the odds. Write one football-based reason for each selection.
- Keep the ticket short. Two or three well-researched legs are easier to evaluate than ten favourites.
- Avoid duplicate exposure. If several legs depend on the same team or match pattern, your risk is more concentrated than it appears.
- Check team news. Line-ups, rotation, injuries and fixture congestion can change the bet.
- Compare the market, not the badge. A famous club at a short price can still be poor value.
- Decide the stake first. Do not increase it because the potential payout looks close to a personal target.
